The city of Most has approved the purchase of the iconic Prior department store in the city centre for CZK 62 million as part of a larger plan to revitalize the area. The purchase, which was unanimously supported by all 38 city councillors, comes in response to the building’s deteriorating condition and the need for extensive renovations.
The department store, now 47 years old, has suffered from significant wear and tear, with issues such as leaks becoming more pronounced. According to Mayor Marek Hrvol (ProMOST), the building will require hundreds of millions of crowns in repairs. “The building is central to our plans for redeveloping the city centre, and this purchase is a crucial step in that process,” Hrvol told the council.
The revitalization plan includes the possibility of transforming part of the building into a modern multiplex cinema, filling a gap in the city’s entertainment options. The remaining space would be dedicated to commercial purposes and services.
“We believe it’s a good deal at a reasonable price,” said opposition councillor Jiří Nedvěd, who supports preserving the Brutalist-style structure. “This building has a place in our city’s landscape.”
The city will conduct a structural engineering survey to assess the building’s integrity before moving forward with any renovations. An architectural competition will follow, determining the future design and function of the department store. Mayor Hrvol emphasized that while the building’s function may evolve, its appearance is likely to remain largely unchanged.
The mayor also encouraged residents to participate in discussions about the future use and design of the landmark building as the city moves ahead with its ambitious revitalization plans.
