Slovaks shifting to small format grocery chains

19 July 2017

Hypermarkets peaked some time ago in Slovakia, but a new wave of small grocery chains is now making serious inroads into the way consumers shop. In the past, people were anxious to buy in bulk for cheap prices at the expense of quality. The Slovak Spectator writes that growing chains of local groceries are now backed by serious capital, such as Delia, which is being developed by Arca Capital, along with others such as Moj Obchod, Fresh, Fajne and Yeme. Delia has grown to 26 stores around Bratislava (with two more under construction) while Yeme now has two. The key to all of these stores is providing higher quality produce, with many consumers saying they prefer locally, often organically grown goods.
