Czech e-shops sales hit CZK 100bn in record year

28 December 2016

This year looks like yet another record result for Czech e-shops with the total volume of sales likely to jump from CZK 81bn in 2015 to nearly CZK 100bn. The Czech Association for Electronic Commerce says the strong sales figures are largely down to record Christmas sales, which make up roughly one-third of the sales of e-shops. The biggest of them, Alza.cz, made CZK 1bn in the last seven days before the holiday. Marketing director Karel Kučera said “On Monday, Dec. 19, customers bought goods worth CZK 200bn in a single day.” Datart, an electronics goods competitor to Alza.cz, saw its biggest day of sales on December 23.

Alza, however, is in hot water with the Czech Trade Inspection Authority which has begun proceedings over the fact that the company’s store in Holešovice in Prague 7 was open on Dec. 26. This is illegal for all stores that are bigger than 200 sqm. Kučera claims the company didn’t break any regulations. “We believe the law is unconstitutional and that it doesn’t define the concept of retail space.”
