Poland’s prime minister Beata Szydło has replaced the outgoing finance minister Paweł Szałamacha with the country’s deputy minister of development, Mateusz Morawiecki, while letting him keep his old job. The decision has naturally raised concerns that Morawiecki has been given too much power, as he prepares to head a new body called the Economic Committee of Council of Ministers set to be established by the Polish government.
“Morawiecki is an author of the Responsible Development Plan and he will be coordinating work of the committee,” said prime minister Szydło adding that Szałamacha has resigned from his ministerial post and that she had accepted his decision. “Szałamcha will oversee a different, very important, task,” she added.
“The concept of the Economic Committee of Council of Ministers will allow Morawiecki to influence all economic ministries,” BBC Chief Economist Stanisław Gomułka told the Polish Press Agency. He points out that Morawiecki is taking all responsibility for his plan, while PM is accepting a secondary role in the implementation process.
