The Latvian Land Fund has bought €1.13m worth of farmland since it was established in July 2015. The fund has signed deals on a total of 43 land parcels covering 629 ha, mostly in the country’s Zemgale and Vidzeme provinces. In total, the fund bought 161 ha in Zemgale, 161 ha in Vidzeme, 131 ha in Kurzeme, 92 ha in Latgale and 58 ha in the Riga region. The fund buys unused land parcels that do not exceed the average market price for the region and then sells or leases them to farmers.
