Lithuanian minister questions need for 2nd LNG terminal

28 January 2016

Lithuania’s Energy Minister Rokas Masiulis is questioning the rationale behind plans to build a second liquefied natural gas terminal in the town of Klaipeda. He told the LETA/BNS agency that the existing terminal suffices for the region’s LNG requirements and that a second isn’t required. “My opinion is that the market of the Baltic countries is obviously too small for two LNG terminals. Opening one more terminal makes no sense, in my opinion,” he said. The statement will not be appreciated by the Estonian company Alexela, which has been planning for the construction of a new terminal since 2007 and has already completed an environmental impact assessment for it. Alexela also applied for €344m in financing with the Connect Europe Facility fund, however it has done so without seeking the approval of market regulators.
