Hypermarkets still rule Czech sales

7 February 2013

Revenues at hypermarkets may have peaked as Czech consumers become increasingly sensitive to price differences. Hypermarket turnovers dropped CZK 700m (0.6 percent) in 2012, according to the consultancy Nielsen. At a recent retail conference in Prague, Nielsen manager Petr Křiklan said that increasingly price-conscious buyers are focusing on cheaper goods, bolstering the turnovers of discount outlets. “I expect further strengthening of the discount formats,” he said. Despite the drop, hypermarkets continue to control sales in the Czech Republic, cashing in CZK 124.5bn in 2012. Supermarkets came in a distant second with CZK 65bn, while discount shops are still running third with just CZK 57bn in turnover.
