The Ministry for National Economy has made 28 exemptions to the ban on mall construction to date. The ban is on the building of new stores, bigger than 300 sqm. There have been 82 requests, of which 28 were accepted and 31 declined, the rest are still being considered, or have not yet been officially given the thumb’s up or down. Among the 28 only one was a request from a foreign investor: the project of the Polish Echo Investment, the Mundo city center project. The ban on new mall construction has not been criticized by the European Union, however, it’s due expire in 2014. The government has not announced any plans about what will happen after the expiration.
