Despite the ban on shopping centers, introduced from 1, January, 2012, a new OBI store will be built in Győr. The local government of Győr approved OBI’s plans, after giving permission last year to Auchan as well. The 8,000 sqm DIY store should be ready by the spring of 2013 and would provide 80 workplaces. The OBI will build its own store, and it will also reconstruct and modify the roads around the new store as well. Some suspect this is simply a ruse to justify the building permit. Last year, the local government gave permission to Auchan to build a new store in Győr, and the government justified the decision by explaining that Auchan will not only construct a new store, but will do a traffic development as well.
