Bulgaria and Romania are relaunching plans for a hydroelectric plant on the Danube

22 February 2024

Bulgaria’s National Electricity Company (NEK) and Romania’s Hidroelectrica are reactivating a joint hydroelectric plant construction project on the Danube between the cities of Nikopol in Bulgaria and Turnu Măgurele in Romania, announced the Bulgarian Minister of Energy, Rumen Radev.

The project dates back 50 years and was originally presented in the 80s and 90s. It also includes the construction of a second bridge over the Danube that would connect the two countries. It is estimated that this construction would cost the two countries EUR 6 billion.

The hydroelectric plant should generate 800 MW of electricity annually. However, environmentalists strongly oppose the project, saying it poses risks to biodiversity. Between Nikopol and Turnu Măgurele there are several islets that are reserves and that could be destroyed by the construction works.
