Crisis on semiconductor market continues to deepen

18 March 2022

“Contrary to optimistic predictions from a few months ago, the global crisis on the semiconductor market not only continues, but even deepens and there is no reason to believe that it will end in 2022,” said Jakub Faryś president of the Polish Association Automotive Industry (PZPM).

“Everything indicates that the expectations that the situation on the semiconductor market will normalize in the second half of 2022 should be revised. I do not expect this crisis to be resolved in the coming months. In this respect, 2022 will be equally difficult for manufacturers from the automotive industry. as the previous one, and taking into account all other factors, including the war in Ukraine, it will be even tougher and more demanding,” said Faryś.

According to him, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is not only a matter of the direct disappearance of parts and components produced in these two countries from the market, but also of, for example, the problems of car manufacturers in Russia.

“Even without the announced nationalization of Russian factories, the suspension of commercial operations in Russia means less funds for car manufacturers, because it is not the case that the few or even more percent of production that went to the Russian market can be easily redirected to other markets,” emphasized the president.

In his opinion, there is also the question of how the situation in terms of the availability of raw materials, not only energy ones, will develop.

“The communicating vessel system in which we operate is starting to fail, problems in Russia or Ukraine may have consequences somewhere on the other side of the world. For example, one of the automotive factories in Poland is just expanding and has a problem with the delivery of steel elements that were manufactured on the other side of the world. Ukraine. If they do not arrive within 3-5 months, the factory will not start up according to schedule and will not implement the production plan, which includes an increase in production capacity,” explained Faryś.

PZPM is the largest Polish organization of employers in the automotive industry, currently associating 50 companies: manufacturers and representatives of manufacturers of motor vehicles, motorcycles, scooters and body manufacturers in Poland.
