Activists pasted Sebranka signs on Sberbank’s shop windows in Brno

1 March 2022

People passing the Sberbank branch in Panská Street in the center of Brno this morning saw large Sebranka signs on shop windows the next day. They are processed in the graphic style and characteristic colors of the financial institution, which is currently closed. The changed logo was created in the past by the Brno street artist Timo. Anti-war activists signed up on social networks to put the Sebranka sign on shop windows.

Although Sberbank CZ operates in the Czech Republic, its assets are in Russia. After the Russian army invaded Ukraine, the bank got into trouble. Clients started withdrawing their money and canceling their accounts. Queues formed, and the bank closed its branches on Friday afternoon, stopped Internet banking, and curtailed card transactions.

The Czech National Bank has taken steps to revoke Sberbank CZ’s banking license. The branches remain closed, as does the one in Brno, where people still came today, but in vain.

The teams NeBoj, Food Not Bombs and the Anarchist Federation signed up to put the Sebranka sign in the shop windows. According to them, Sberbank CZ tried to pretend that it had nothing to do with the Russian Sberbank. “However, a lot of people did not believe in these transparent excuses,” says Food Not Bombs Brno on Facebook.
