Retail sales increased last year by 7.5 percent in Romania, above the European average of 3.3 percent, but below Eastern Europe, where the advance was 10.6 percent, according to data from Retail Audit NielsenIQ.
As prices began to rise since the end of last year, Romanians started to use online shopping to find the lowest prices and the best promotions, they bought more often from discount stores or they started to choose cheaper products.
Retailers’ own brands, which are usually priced lower, continue to gain ground in front of the manufacturer’s brands, accounting for 15.1 percent of total sales.
