Jeroen Pels, director of mortgages at Triodos Bank, has announced that beginning in August, his bank will no longer provide 100 percent mortgages for homes with energy rating C or lower. The exception will be buyers of family homes who have specific plans to invest in energy-saving measures. The main goal of this step is to make people aware of the importance of sustainability, but the bank also wants to prevent excessive lending. The monthly costs of an inefficient home are higher, and over time, as energy concerns increase in importance, houses with poor energy ratings will increasingly be losing value.
