New Jersey unveils huge wind power port project

17 June 2020

The governor of New Jersey has announced plans to build an offshore wind port in Salem County in what’s being touted as the first of its kind in north America. Governor Phil Murphy said the project was part of the state’s plans to recover from the coronavirus pandemic. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” he said. “The emerging offshore-wind industry is one that gives us this tremendous growth potential, and offers this opportunity to position ourselves as a leader in an emerging global industry that will create jobs for the years to come.” Experts involved in the project expect it to generate $500m annually in economy activity while creating 1,500 permanent jobs. The port’s location in southern New Jersey is of particular significance, according to Governor Murphy. “We desperately need jobs, good-paying union jobs, in places like Salem County,” he said.
