Hungary boosting natural gas pipeline capacity

3 June 2020

The government is currently working to increase the capacity of its gas pipeline to Slovakia ahead of plans to make the Balkan Stream gas pipeline. It’s an extension of the TurkStream pipeline connecting Russia and Turkey. Hungary is also planning to import liquefied natural gas from Croatia as it diversifies its energy mix, which has a substantial impact on trade figures. The country’s export volume fell 5.6 percent in March, while imports fell by 1 percent y-o-y in March, according to data recently published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH). The trade surplus for the month was €301m, down €343m from the same period last year and €135m less than KSH’s earlier estimate. Exports in March totaled €9bn, down 7.5 percent y-o-y. The import volume totaled €8.7bn, down 4.2 percent from the previous year, according to the KSH data.
