Czech banks receiving thousands of loan deferal requests

24 March 2020

People and companies are taking advantage of offers by their banks to defer loan and mortgage payments by three months, reports Idnes.cz. The paper reports that Česká spořitelna has already received 5,700 deferral applications for 3,750 consumer loans, 1,600 mortgage loans and 350 company loans. The bank began offering the program on Friday. Raiffeisenbank’s spokeswoman Petra Kopecká said the bank had received “thousands” of applications over the last five days, though she added that there was no way to know as of yet how many of them would be approved. Home Credit’s spokeswoman said the consumer loan specialist had received “hundreds” of requests for one-month payment deferrals. The Czech Banking Association recommended that its members offer three-month deferrals.

“Three months are a signal of trust that the situation will improve,” said the CBA’s spokeswoman Monika Petrásková. “If the extraordinary measures last longer, which no one wants, we’ll have to return to this and solve it with a new perspective.”
