Czech online retailers looking abroad for growth

Czech online retailers are expanding beyond their national borders to take on neighboring markets of all of its neighbors. The idnes.cz server reports that 25 years after its founding, the biggest of them, Alza.cz, will be opening for business in Austria and in Germany, having already launched in Slovakia and Hungary. “Expansion is important from from a development point of view, but we’re still a company that’s taxed in the Czech Republic,” said the vice chairman of Alza’s board, Tomáš Havryluk. It plans to concentrate in Austria and Germany on mobile phones, computers, televisions, appliances and home electronics, writes idnes.cz. The Czech online perfume retailers Notino is already active on 22 markets, where it produces 75 percent of its turnover. Rohlik.cz, which focuses on the groceries sector, intends to open a Budapest branch this year. Rohlik’s founder Tomáš Čupr revealed last week he would be turning to the bond market to raise CZK 777m in new expansion funds. The company made an operational profit last year for the first time, and Čupr expects its EBITDA numbers to hit CZK 100m in 2019.
