Czech holiday retail ban could be eased

11 June 2018

Two Czech parliamentary deputies from the ANO party have introduced a bill that would allow large warehouse retailers to open on state holidays. The trick lies in removing the word “warehouse” from the wording of the 2016 law, which, literally, means “large store.” If passed, stores that sell to other companies and entrepreneurs would be allowed to remain open, unlike other stores that are larger than 200 sqm. Patrik Nacher of the ANO party predicts that the ODS party will also support the bill. Among the holidays that employees would have to report to work are the two days following Christmas, January 1 and Eastern Monday.
