Free stage for street artists: Galeria Katowicka sets trends again

25 September 2024

Shopping centres today are evolving beyond traditional retail, embracing local community needs. Galeria Katowicka in Poland has launched a unique initiative—Free Stage by Kato—offering street musicians a dedicated space to perform, powered by eco-friendly solar panels, where they can give free concerts to a large audience.

This innovative stage addresses the spontaneous but chaotic performances that used to take place in front of the shopping centre and nearby railway station. Street artists, often performing at the same time, would compete for attention, creating noise and disarray. Galeria Katowicka’s solution brings order to this creative energy, providing a platform that enhances both the artists’ and audiences’ experience.

Situated in an urban setting near café gardens, the Free Stage offers musicians a weather-resistant space where they can perform comfortably. Powered in part by photovoltaic panels, the stage is environmentally conscious, aligning with modern sustainability trends. Musicians can apply for performance slots through a special section on Galeria Katowicka’s website, ensuring a structured concert schedule. This not only improves the quality of performances but also allows residents to plan their visits around live music events.

“We’re proud of our creative initiatives at Galeria Katowicka,” says Anna Szczerkowska, the shopping centre’s marketing manager. “From DOGBAR, where shoppers dine with their pets, to this Free Stage, we aim to align with the rhythm of city life. Katowicka is consistently finding ways to connect with the community, blending urban life with artistic expression.”

One of the first to perform was Mariusz Goli, a renowned guitarist and street artist, popular across Europe for his captivating performances. In addition to local talent, the Free Stage has hosted DJ sets by Radio ESKA, bringing a festive vibe to Friday nights.

The Free Stage by Kato has been warmly embraced by both artists and residents. As Katowice continues to grow its reputation as a UNESCO City of Music, this new stage is poised to become a lasting venue for creativity and cultural engagement.
