Alza.cz charged with remaining open on state holiday

30 October 2018

The Czech Trade Inspection Authority (COI) continued to battle the online store Alza.cz over its refusal to close down on official state holidays. Most large stores shut their doors last Sunday, according to a law passed in 2016, in honor of the founding of the country. But Alza.cz customers were still able to make orders and pick them up. The company says its outlets are not stores, but rather pick-up points. No sales are conducted on the site on those days, it claims. COI made 100 inspections on the October 28 holiday and found three infractions, an improvement of two compared to last year. Alza.cz paid a find of CZK 200,000 earlier this year for remaining open on May 8.
