Alza.cz loses court case over holiday opening fines

22 July 2020

The biggest online retailer in the Czech Republic Alza.cz has lost a court battle for the right to keep its pick-up points open on official holidays. The company was fined CZK 230,000 for opening its flagship store in Prague 7 to allow customers to take delivery of goods on December 26, 2018. Stores larger than 200 sqm aren’t allowed to open during the Christmas holidays. Alza.cz argued that the inspector who visited the company’s location in Prague 7 picked up a mouse she had ordered online. Czech law, claims the company, doesn’t define what a store is, making it impossible for the state to stop it from handing out goods people pay for online. The court rejected this argument.
