Online sales at Media Markt and Saturn electronics jumped 300 percent in April, according to their parent company Ceconomy. That followed a doubling of sales already in March, as much of Germany’s consumer market made the rapid transition to eshops. Compared to 2019, the company’s online sales rose by 22.9 percent to €859m for its second financial quarter. Ceconomy’s CEO Bernhard Duttmann said this year would be challenging due to the unpredictable nature of the crisis. “However, it also offers the opportunity to accelerate the company’s transformation,” he said. Ceconomy recorded a €309m loss for the quarter due in part to write-downs on its stake in the French electronics chain Fnac Darty.
