Corso Pilsen project halted by voters

16 January 2013

Pilsen residents voted against plans for an extensive shopping mall that developer Amadeus Real wants to build on Americká street in the city center. In a referendum held last week, voters asked the city to use legal means to block construction. The mixed-use complex, called Corso Americká, was planned for a 35,000 sqm brownfield where the cultural center Inwest had been torn down. The city will probably cancel the land contract with Amadeus Real and change the master plan so that no large-scale retail project can be built on the site in the future. Pilsen residents and architects feared that such a huge shopping mall would destroy the city’s existing retail infrastructure.
