Croatia has extended its ban on the sale of agricultural land to foreigners for another three years, meaning they won’t be possible until June 30, 2023. Croatia was supposed to transition away from the ban over a period of seven years (which runs out this month), but it submitted a request to the European Commission to extend the restrictions.
Croatia’s Minister of Agriculture Marija Vuckovic committed herself to arranging the maximum extension of the deadline. Officials are worried about the potential effect of a sudden opening of the state-owned agricultural land market on local farmers, who lack the purchasing power of their heavily-subsidized EU brethren.
