Czech consumers planning to restrict Christmas spending

The consumer loan company Fair Credit has warned that the pandemic will have a serious impact on holiday shopping, as Czechs plan to save money in comparison with previous years. In a survey of nearly 900 people, it found that most households were planning to spend an average of CZK 5,000 this Christmas. The company writes that 39 percent of Czechs traditionally did nearly all of their holiday shopping in stores but that this year 68 percent will be buying gifts on line this year. While half of all Czechs will spend CZK 5,000 on gifts this year, one-third will spend up to CZK 10,000, while 11 percent are expecting to pay out up to CZK 15,000. Three percent of those surveyed said they wouldn’t have enough money for gifts this year. “Last year’s record numbers for holiday shopping showed that the average Czech spend more than CZK 10,000 on Christmas. Our survey showed that there’s a general intention to save money this year and hold back,” said Fair Credit’s director Tomas Konvicka. “It appears that we’re aware of the risks that irresponsible behavior and spending can have and that fears over future developments in these uncertain times is holding us back.”
