Despite new tax, bank card purchases to remain free

16 January 2013

Hungarian banks said they will not charge their customers for making purchases with their bank cards despite the introduction of a new 0.2-percent transaction tax at the start of the year. Some banks announced earlier that they would pass this charge on to customers; however, they later changed their minds, according to local newspaper reports. There are reports that the Hungarian government is looking to improve its relationship with banks active in the country, but it remains to be seen how this will play out in practice.
