The hypermarket chain Globus is the latest in a series of a large format retailers that are thinking small when planning for expansion. Having opened 15 hypermarkets around the Czech Republic, its next few openings are likely to be stores that are just a fraction of the size that sell a high percentage of Globus branded goods. The first new store will open in the Dubina housing estate in Pardubice, while another will be opened in Prague. At just 165 square meters, Globus Fresh stores will be just a fraction of the size of the company’s usual hypermarkets which typically exceed 10,000 sqm. Spokeswoman Pavla Hobíková said customers told them they went to Globus for its house brand of food products (called Poctiva). However, small format are gaining in popularity everywhere, so it could be that people are just sick of walking through huge hypermarkets just to buy a few select goods.
