Another new parking house in the city will bring hundreds of new parking spaces. This time, the city of Ostrava has invested in the construction of a multifunctional parking house at the Ostrava City Hospital, providing parking spaces for patients, hospital staff and the public. The parking house will also provide parking for drivers whose parking will soon be restricted by the construction of other city buildings, such as the concert hall and others on 28 October Street. The new parking structure will offer 465 parking spaces, 27 of which are designated for the disabled. Electric cars can be recharged at six locations and there are also bicycle storage facilities for 54 of these vehicles. The previous parking capacity at the site has been quadrupled thanks to the construction of the parking house.
“The construction of the parking house began in the autumn of 2021 and the last works were completed in June, with parking available in the above-ground part of the building on a trial basis from 15 June 2024. At present, the public can park there for free, and we anticipate that a barrier parking system will be installed during the holiday season. The cost of the construction of the building is approximately CZK 409 million excluding VAT. The contractor of the building was GEOSAN GROUP a. s., the project documentation was prepared by KANIA a. s.,” explained Břetislav Riger, Deputy Mayor.
The building consists of three underground and three above-ground floors with an open parking area above the ceiling of the third floor. From the structural point of view, it is a reinforced concrete monolithic building, composed of two expansion units. Both expansion units are based on a flat foundation reinforced concrete monolithic slab. For more details see https://1url.cz/B1Jbx.
New sidewalks and two crosswalks were also constructed and the construction also included landscaping – perennial beds planted with a mixture of perennials and grasses. “The last open parking deck has greenery in large-scale self-watering containers, and multi-stemmed trees, ornamental grasses and climbers have been planted. The mixed perennial beds provide a habitat for insects in the city, but they also trap pollen dust and the visual aspect is also not negligible, making the areas more attractive, a piece of nature in the urban space,” added Aleš Boháč, Deputy Mayor for the Environment. The main motif of the designed greenery was the mirroring of the colours of the corten facade in the warm colours of the plants in the flowerbeds, the bronze shades of the growing leaves, the golden inflorescences of the grasses or the reddish leaves of the plants and the dark brown seedlings of the perennials in autumn.
“In addition to these new 465 parking spaces at our city hospital, drivers will be able to take advantage of dozens more spaces later this year in the second parking structure being completed at the Poklad Community Center. Last summer, we offered nearly two hundred new parking spaces in the completed parking structure at our zoo. Similarly, in 2023, we made available 155 new parking spaces under the University of Ostrava building at Černá louka, and we also completed the modification and extension of the P+R parking lot within the Hranečník terminal. From 2022, people can use the first parking house near the Poklad House of Culture in Ostrava-Poruba for parking. Work will also soon begin on a new parking house at the regional office with a capacity of up to 600 parking spaces, to be built on the site of the existing car park with the current 77 parking spaces. We are continuously dealing with the issue of parking in the city. However, the construction of these necessary facilities brings with it the usual construction difficulties, so I thank everyone for their patience and understanding during the related construction work,” concluded Jan Dohnal, Mayor of Ostrava.
