Hungarian supermarkets taking market share

27 April 2012

According to the latest market research by ACNielsen, a global marketing research firm, the turnover of the 15 biggest supermarket chains in Hungary was HUF 3,687bn. Tesco was the biggest of them, while CBA ranked second and Coop came in third, demonstrating that Hungarian chains have been gaining influence on the market. ACNielsen suggests this could be in part thanks to supporting policies from the Hungarian government towards Hungarian chains. Last year Lidl, Tesco, Aldi and Penny expanded the most, but the policy appears to have ended this year. Meanwhile, Auchan plans to take over the seven Cora stores of Hungary in the coming months, and according to as Katalin Gillemot, communication executive of Auchan, they will remain open.
