Hungary’s parliament has passed a law that would make it illegal for large stores to open their doors on Sundays in a move that’s been criticized by business owners and trade unions alike. Remarkably, it’s an initiative that was brought by the country’s Christian Democrats party, which fended off opposition from the party of prime minister Viktor Orban, Fidesz. The minister of economy criticized the the bill in November, warning that 20 percent of Hungarians shop on Sundays, but this habit has angered the Christian Democrats. Exceptions will apparently be made for smaller, family-owned stores of less than 200 sqm. Stores in airports and train stations will not be affected by the law, which comes into effect in mid-March.
