Letna mall scheme proves controversial

14 May 2014

A new shopping mall project next to Sparta football stadium in Prague 7 – Letná has sparked outrage from the district’s Green Party and civic initiatives. One of these, the Club for Old Prague claims it’s wrong for a shopping center to replace a sports ground. Green deputies argue that the scheme, together with an office project planned by the developer Lordship, would bring thousands more cars to the area. More, they claim, than the nearby Blanka tunnel would be able to absorb.

The shopping mall is being planned where a training facility currently stands between the Sparta stadium and the mouth of the Blanka tunnel. The football club, AC Sparta, claims the tunnel has made the training ground unusable in any case. The project is currently being reviewed by Prague’s Institute for Planning and Development (IPR).
