Lidl doesn’t take advantage of Sunday closure loophole

10 July 2015

Lidl has decided not to declare any of its stores on the Hungarian market as traditional outdoor markets. The move will allow the German retailer to stay open just one Sunday a month. The Hungarian government introduced a new law at the beginning of the year that requires stores to close on Sundays.
“As of March 1, we have extended opening hours in our stores,” said Jenő Grósz, chairman of Hungarian Lidl’s management. “Every player of the retail market has one Sunday to stay open a year, and we are going to accept that opportunity. As a responsible corporation, we are not planning to stay open on any other Sunday.”
According to Budapest Business Journal, the Hungarian-owned CBA had declared two of its stores near Lake Balaton as traditional outdoor markets since they sell goods in their parking lots. The declaration entitles those CBA locations to stay open on Sundays.
