New Polish government plans online sales tax for 2016

11 January 2016

Poland’s new conservative government is reportedly planning to implement a new tax on nearly 20,000 online businesses operating on the Polish market, the daily Rzeczpospolita reports. Despite fears the new regulations could hurt the country’s online retailers, traditional retailers are supporting the idea. Under the new tax regime, smaller retailers could be paying less than 2 percent in tax.

“Poland’s online businesses will be forced to raise prices, which will substantially hurt their competitiveness against international online stores,” Monika Majewska of the clothing retailers Balladine.com told Rzeczpospolita.

Recent studies show Poles are expected to spend nearly PLN 45m online this year, more than a 20-percent jump compared to 2015. The new tax could be implemented during the first quarter of 2016 and is expected to add PLN 2bn to the country’s tax revenues.
