Having taken the reins of the Tesco chain at the beginning of September, Dave Lewis has wasted little time before warning of his intentions to carry out a shake-up of the company’s top management, in an effort to boost employee morale. “Let’s be honest, the changes are required for the company. We don’t want to see negative trends continue affecting our business,” Lewis said.
Employee morale is extremely low in the Polish division of the UK-based retailer, after the company refused to accept union demands for higher pay in August. The company agreed to 3.5-percent hike beginning in November, while trade unions demand up to 15-percent increase. Union officials charge that Tesco’s management hasn’t provided convincing evidence that low inflation and tough market conditions make larger concessions impossible.
