The number of companies open for business in the second half of May rose to 92 percent, according to the newest survey by Banco de Portugal and the National Statistics Institute. It was up slightly from 90 percent for the first half of May. In April, just 83 percent of businesses were open. Accommodations and catering were the hardest hit sector, but they also made huge gains during May, rising from 45 percent to 58 percent open. As for other sectors, industry and energy escaped relatively unscathed with 96 percent of companies operating and 97 percent of construction companies also doing business. Other figures included the transport and storage sector (94 percent open), and the information and communication sector (93 percent).
