Part of the army garrison house in Vyškov will be demolished and a home for the elderly built

A larger part of the former army garrison house in Vyškov will be demolished and an investor will build a home for the elderly in its place. 175 beds are planned. The town councillors took note of the plan, the town reported on its website. The building was bought in 2016 from the Ministry of Defence by Hleda Consulting for CZK 10.5 million.

“From the beginning, when the army garrison building ceased to serve its purpose, we wanted the dilapidated site to regain a beneficial use. The intended home, with an expected capacity of 175 long-term and short-term beds, fulfils something like this,” said the mayor of Vyškov, Karel Jurka (ODS). He reminded that the town never owned the building.

“We want to have a home partly focused on the care of seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, but it will also serve clients who are interested in a shorter stay. We are talking, for example, about cases when relatives need to place a family member, whom they otherwise take care of for a long time, in the facility for just two weeks,” described Zdeněk Mrzena, the managing director of the investor company.

He said that the building permit is pending. The relevant departments of the municipal authority have already given the green light to the project documentation. Dismantling and demolition works as well as construction should start this year. The building, which for years was mainly used for cultural events, will remain as the facilities for changing rooms or kitchen operations. According to Mrzena, the rear building, including the smaller of the halls, is awaiting reconstruction. On the other hand, the demolition of the larger part of the building is planned.

The total area of the site exceeds 11,000 square metres, of which the built-up area reaches almost 5,000 square metres. The main entrance will be from Dědická Street. Visitors will enter the reception area, which will be followed by a café for clients of the facility, a waiting room with surgeries and a passage to the atrium, which will serve as a relaxation area. The café is to be followed by the aforementioned smaller multipurpose hall. There will also be spaces for rehabilitation and activation programmes for the elderly, a kitchen or laundry and other technical facilities. The home as a whole will meet the needs for accommodation of seniors with twenty-four-hour care, it envisages 150 beds for permanent residence and 25 short-term beds. Sixty staff members are expected to care for the clients.

The Army Garrison House was first offered for sale in December 2012. However, there was no interest and the army gradually reduced the price. Previously, the house was used for cultural events, such as balls, and even dance school students headed there. However, due to its loss-making operation, the ministry had it closed and decided to sell it on the basis of an analysis. In 2016, the buyer of the building emerged from the 14th round of the tender, when three bidders applied for the building. Initially, the army asked for nearly CZK 100 million for the building, with the highest bid in spring 2016 being CZK 10,506,000.
