Picnic opens Herne distribution center

6 April 2020

The Dutch online grocery company Picnic has opened a new distribution center in the city of Herne in Germany’s industrial Ruhrgebiet region. Ironically, while the 14,000 sqm center will provide much-needed job opportunities, it will not change anything about the fact that Picnic is unable to provide its delivery service to the city. But the city’s mayor Frank Dudda is still enthusiastic about the investment, saying it fits into Herne’s strategy for economic regeneration. At the moment, the logistics center will expand Picnic’s ability to serve the region (Dortmund is just 25 km to the east) and company officials claim that it will eventually roll out service for Herne as well.
