Poczta Polska is testing the possibility of introducing an RFID data identification system

28 April 2021

Poczta Polska, as part of a research project co-financed in the amount of over PLN 6 million by the National Center for Research and Development (NCBR), will test the possibility of introducing a radio data identification system, RFID, Poczta announced. The commissioning of the system for testing is scheduled for the turn of May and June.

In the sorting plants of WER Pruszcz Gdański, WER Zabrze and WER Szczecin, the postal operator will test the possibility of introducing a radio data identification system, i.e. RFID. Its results will be the basis for a decision to introduce this technology on a large scale. Postal operators will check to what extent it will improve the quality of postage processing and timely delivery, as well as the security of postal traffic, it said.

“The basis for the functioning of an efficient logistics system is, first of all, current and quick information about the course of the entire process. This is particularly important in the case of the provision of postal services in such an extensive logistics network as Poczta Polska has. In the case of registered mail (e.g. registered letters, parcels) we use monitoring, and we obtain data by scanning barcodes placed on parcels and loads “- said Andrzej Bodziony, vice-president of Poczta Polska.

Contactless, passive radio frequency identification (RFID) can replace the event recording currently used in the Post Office by means of two-dimensional code scanners. This more modern solution will allow for the generation of management information identifying shipments in real time, faster processing of shipments, ensuring safety and appropriate quality indicators, development and introduction of new services, emphasized.

Thanks to the use of RFID, it will be possible to track the parcel at every stage of its journey, reacting to disruptions in the logistics chain on an ongoing basis, so that it fulfills its tasks even better and the customer receives parcels more efficiently. This is another task implemented as part of Poczta Polska’s strategy for 2021- 2023. Tested RFID solutions simplify the process of shipment development, eliminating the human factor. In the event of successful tests and the introduction of RFID technology on a company-wide scale, employees will not have to scan shipments manually. The advantages and disadvantages of this system will be checked by the Post office in a cycle of planned tests during the year.
