Poland: Arrears of 18-24 year olds amounted to PLN 1 billion at the end of July

The arrears of people aged 18 to 24 amounted to PLN 1 billion at the end of July this year, according to data from the BIG InfoMonitor and BIK Debtor Register. The arrears increased for a year by more than 18%, and the number of unreliable debtors also increased by more than 7,000 people (to about 132,000).

The average arrears of 18-24 year olds, on the other hand, increased for a year by 11%, to PLN 7,637. When it comes to the topography of debt, the Silesian province leads the way. Its young residents collectively have more than PLN 137 million in outstanding payments. This is followed by those registered in the Mazowieckie (PLN 122.9 million) and Dolnoslaskie (PLN 106.6 million) provinces. On the other hand, the least unpaid debts are owed by people from the Świętokrzyskie region (PLN 17 million). Analyzing the percentage of unpaid debtors in this age group, the leading provinces already look a bit different. Although the top region is Lower Silesia, where 7% of residents aged 18-24 have financial problems, it is followed by Lubuskie (6.5%), Warmińsko-Mazurskie and Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeships (6.4% each). The smallest share of young non-payers is in the provinces of Podkarpackie (2.1%), Świętokrzyskie (3.1%), Lubelskie and Podlaskie (3.3% each). The average for the country is 5%, according to the report.

According to BIG InfoMonitor and BIK databases, more than half (51%) of the outstanding debt of people between the ages of 18 and 24 are non-credit arrears. Indeed, the total amount of unpaid current bills, penalty fees for driving without a ticket or alimony on time is more than PLN 513 million – that’s an average of PLN 4,987 per person. However, the average amount of debt varies depending on the type of obligation. In the case of alimony, these can be five-digit sums – PLN 10,247. When it comes to a phone or Internet bill, we are talking about PLN 3,376, and the average value of penalty fees for speeding is PLN 266, it was stated.

In the case of credit obligations, the total amount of outstanding debts is lower at PLN 496 million, but the average debt per person is higher at PLN 7,676. In the case of a home loan, the average value of arrears is PLN 60,704, and in the case of a consumer loan, PLN 7,501.
