Polish government will develop mechanisms to encourage higher interest rates on deposits

In the event that the interest rates on bank deposits do not increase significantly, the government will develop mechanisms that will encourage banks to raise interest rates, government spokesman Piotr Muller announced.

“We discussed the interest rate on deposits – for those people who have savings and would like to save; at the same time not to lose on putinflation and the fact that there are high interest rates. Here we also prepare certain mechanisms, if banks do not do it on their own, we want to be effective. encourage banks to make these deposit amounts higher,” Muller said at a press conference.

“However, we are getting the first signals from the banking sector that such reflection will come on its own in at least some of the sectors. We are counting on it. However, we also have solutions at the national level in other areas that would stimulate such behavior by banks,” he added.

Two weeks ago, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced that interest rates on bank deposits – both for households and enterprises – should rise in line with the increase in interest rates by the central bank and should soon reach at least 3-4%.
