Target pushes forward $15 minimum wage move to July

18 June 2020

Target is the latest big-name retailers to increase its minimum wage to USD 15 per hour and it’s making the move six months ahead of schedule. It’s not a huge jump for the Minneapolis-based chain, which was paying $13 per hour prevously, but the company appears to be sensitive about its public image since racial tension in its hometown sparked weeks of demonstrations and anger. Workers will start working at the higher rate as of July 5, including those working at distribution centers and its offices. Back in 2017, Target committed to raising its minimum wage to $15 per hour but has tacked on a $200 bonus at the end of July to select frontline workers who excelled during the recent coronavirus crisis. “Everything we aspire to do and be as a company builds on the central role our team members play in our strategy,” wrote Target chairman and CEO Brian Cornell in a statement.
