Czech nuclear power plant Temelin started on Friday a scheduled two-month shutdown of its first unit during which technicians will replace roughly a quarter of fuel and check security systems, Temelin spokesman Marek Svitak announced.
Technicians will replace 42 out of 163 fuel assemblies and carry out 62 investments entailing almost 16,000 tasks during the shutdown.
A lot of work will concern the turbine, including the replacement of the rotor and shield of the generator.
Including suppliers, the shutdown will involve about a thousand people.
This is the first planned shutdown of Temelin this year. Unit 1 has been running continuously since May 22, 2021.
Unit 2 is scheduled for shutdown on July 22.
Temelin, launched in December 2000, is the largest electricity producer in Czechia, covering about 20 percent of its consumption.
Last year, Temelin generated 15.86 TWh of electricity. This year, it has been 5.4 TWh so far.
