Tesco and Unilever face dispute

14 October 2016

The UK’s biggest shopping retailer Tesco has began removing Unilever products from its online shelves after a pricing dispute in the wake of the Brexit vote. Unilever, the provider of products such as Marmite, Ben & Jerry’s, and Hellmanns Mayonnaise, has been attempting to raise the prices it charges to retailers by 10 percent in an effort to reduce the effects of the weak pound has on the company.

Tesco has protested against this move and argued that Unilever is “exploiting customers” after increasing movement from the government to leave the European Union. Since the Brexit vote in June the pound is down 19 percent against the US dollar, which has forced retailers and suppliers to face an increase in import prices.
