The British daily Guardian claims that Tesco is planning to take on its competitor Lidl by rolling out its own line of discount stores. The newspaper reports that Tesco has retained the services of Boston Consulting Group to help it work up a new business model and that the company’s management admitted that it was developing a new sales format. This would reportedly offer a range of goods limited to just 3,000 products. Lidovky.cz claims that the standard Tesco Express offers 25,000 products. The server contacted the Czech branch of Tesco to confirm the story, but was told only that it was based on pure speculation. It’s unclear, therefor, whether the alleged new strategy would impact on Tesco’s local operations.
