The functionalist building of the Czech Post near the main railway station in Brno was auctioned today in an electronic auction for a starting price of CZK 117 million. Post spokesman Ivo Vysoudil said, who stated that the post office did not have permission to publish the name of the auction winner. He added that České dráhy has the pre-emptive right to the building, the post office will contact them and offer it to them at this price.
The Czech Post has previously stated that the future of the building, designed by architect Bohuslav Fuchs, has been around for a long time, because the building is not suitable for its operation, is uneconomical and unnecessarily oversized. Instead of a branch next to the main railway station, the post office plans to open two new branches – one in the Letmo Shopping Center opposite the railway station and one in the Šumavská Tower building in the Královo Pole district. However, the post office will be in place until at least the middle of next year.
Yesterday’s auction was the second attempt to sell a functionalist building. No one signed up for the first electronic auction in mid-October; on building, the building was auctioned at a starting price of CZK 117 million. Now negotiations with the winner of the auction will begin. At the same time, we must contact Czech Railways, which has a pre-emptive right to the building.
The station post office, designed by Bohuslav Fuchs, was built at the end of the 1930s as a temporary building. Even then, the relocation of the Brno railway station was being considered, so Fuchs designed a light steel structure for the building so that it could be easily dismantled. A rarity of the building is currently the paternoster lift, which the post office had repaired in 2013 to a serviceable condition. The building was partially repaired in the 1980s, but currently needs a complete renovation.
