UK Supermarkets Face Increasing Competition

30 June 2016

The UK’s top supermarkets are facing declining performance levels for the first time this year compared to the discount chains. Lidl and Aldi have seen sales growth of up to 11.5 percent compared to the top supermarket players, such as Asda whose sales have fallen by 5.9 percent. Tesco has seen the smallest drop in sales with a mere 1.3 percent decline.
Nearly 60 percent of Britons are now visiting Lidl or Aldi and it has been estimated that for every GBP 10 spent in the UK, GBP 1 goes to the two German grocers. Aldi is close to becoming the country’s fifth largest supermarket. There is an increasing fear especially among the top supermarkets that with 40 percent of food being sourced outside the country, the vote on Brexit will impact the industry dramatically.
