John Lewis closing down stores

11 August 2016

The department store operator John Lewis will be closing down its showrooms in Harrogate and Tunbridge Wells after reviewing financial performances for each store. Between them, the two showrooms contributed GBP 370,000 in sales during the last full year. The company claims the Turnbridge Wells store was significantly underperforming compared to others in the company’s network and that while the Harrogate branch was producing average results, it was still unable to match overhead costs. It is estimated that the closure will cost John Lewis around GBP 100,000 with the cessation of trading for both branches being expected by the end of 2016.
