Retail sales up 1.8% in April

20 May 2014

Poland’s retail sales rose by 1.8 percent y-o-y in the first three months of 2014, according to fresh data from Poland’s National Statistical Office (GUS), marking the slowest growth for the sector since the second quarter of 2013. The sector posted a 0.3-percent drop in Q2 2013. According to GUS, retail sales in Poland saw healthy growth for most of 2013, with a 5.5-percent jump in Q1 and 4.4-percent and 3.4-percent increases in Q3 and Q4 respectively.

Retailers may still need to wait for consumer confidence to pick up, market watchers warn, as the sector posted worse-than-expected Easter sales and is facing growing competition from local convenience and discount store chains.
