Shopping cart price in traditional grocery stores increased by 8.1% y / y in January

The value of the average shopping basket in traditional grocery stores increased by 8.1% y / y in January 2022, and turnover in these stores increased by 7.6% y / y, results from cyclic M / platform data.

“Looking at the M / platform data for January 2022, we can easily see the continuation of the trends that we have already seen in the last months of 2021. Due to the increase in the prices of food products, the value of the average shopping cart in a traditional store compared to January 2021 increased by 8 , 1%, and therefore by nearly PLN 2. Thus – with a stable number of visits to grocery stores in the analyzed months and a similar number of products per basket – the total turnover in traditional trade increased by 7.6%,” said Ewa Rybołowicz, director of market analysis M / platform.

The largest categories in terms of the value of sales recorded a decrease in sales – tobacco products (-4.4%), beer (-6.2%), vodka (-5.6%). On the other hand, there was an increase in such categories as dairy products (+ 8%), non-alcoholic beverages (+ 1.2%) and strong alcohols such as whiskey, rum, liqueurs, gin (+ 7%), it was also indicated.

According to the cyclical M / platform survey, the January Traditional Trade Mood Index (NHT) was 15.2 points. This is the lowest level since the beginning of the research. It was also 7.8 points lower. from the forecast for January (NHT +). The index forecast for February was 30 points. and is higher than the January one by 7 points. There are several key factors that contribute to this perception of the current situation in traditional trade – high inflation, a sharp increase in fuel and energy prices and the growing, next wave of the pandemic, has ended.

Analysts of M / platform, a digital service platform supporting traditional retail outlets, analyze the mood of owners and managers of traditional stores at the beginning of each month.
